Pressure Washing vs Soft Washing: Which Does Your Bournemouth Home Actually Need?

If you've been looking into getting your driveway, patio, or exterior walls cleaned and you've come across the terms 'pressure washing' and 'soft washing' used interchangeably — they're not the same thing, and using the wrong method on the wrong surface can cause real damage.

What is pressure washing?

Pressure washing uses a high-pressure jet of water to blast dirt, grime, moss, algae, and staining from hard surfaces. It's fast, highly effective on the right surfaces, and produces dramatic results on heavily soiled areas. The key word is hard surfaces — concrete, brick, block paving, natural stone, and tarmac.

Used incorrectly — on render, timber, older pointing, or any surface that isn't structurally robust — it can strip mortar from between bricks, gouge soft stone, damage render coatings, and force water into gaps where it causes damp problems.

What is soft washing?

Soft washing uses much lower water pressure — comparable to a standard garden hose — combined with biodegradable cleaning solutions to break down biological growth and organic staining at a chemical level rather than a physical one. The cleaning solution does the work rather than the pressure.

Soft washing is appropriate for surfaces that pressure washing would damage: rendered walls, painted masonry, timber cladding, roof tiles, UPVC fascias and soffits, and conservatory roofs.

Which surfaces need which method?

Pressure washing is appropriate for:

•       Concrete driveways

•       Block paving

•       Natural stone patios — sandstone, limestone, and slate

•       Brick paths and walls — where the pointing is in good condition

•       Tarmac driveways

Soft washing is appropriate for:

•       Rendered walls — both traditional sand and cement render and modern monocouche systems

•       Roof tiles — whether clay, concrete, or slate

•       UPVC fascias, soffits, and guttering

•       Timber cladding and decking

•       Conservatory roofs — both glass and polycarbonate panels

Why Bournemouth homes need exterior cleaning more than most

Bournemouth's coastal position creates conditions that accelerate biological growth on exterior surfaces. The combination of mild temperatures, high humidity from the Channel, and salt-laden air that promotes moisture retention creates an almost ideal environment for algae, lichen, and moss to establish and spread.

Left untreated, biological growth does more than look unsightly. Algae and moss trap moisture against exterior surfaces, accelerating the degradation of render, pointing, and paving materials. A regular programme of soft washing for walls and fascias, combined with periodic pressure washing of hard standing areas, is the most cost-effective way to manage this.

How often do exterior surfaces need cleaning in Bournemouth?

•       Driveways and patios: every 1–2 years depending on aspect and tree cover

•       Rendered walls and fascias: soft washing every 2–3 years for most properties

•       Roof tiles: every 3–5 years depending on material and lichen growth

•       Block paving: every 1–2 years, with re-sanding of joints after cleaning

Frequently asked questions

Can you pressure wash my block paving without disturbing the sand between the blocks?

We take care to use appropriate pressure settings that clean the surface effectively without displacing jointing sand unnecessarily. Re-sanding after cleaning may be advisable if joints are already depleted.

Is soft washing safe for my plants and lawn?

Yes. The biodegradable solutions we use are formulated to be safe around plants and garden areas when applied and rinsed correctly.

How long will the results last?

It varies by surface and environment. A soft-washed rendered wall in a sunnier aspect may stay clean for 3 years or more. A shaded driveway may need annual attention.

Can you combine exterior cleaning with window cleaning in the same visit?

Yes — combining services in a single visit is more cost-effective and more convenient. Many customers book an exterior deep clean once or twice a year alongside their regular window cleaning schedule.
